DARMASISWA RI SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS

ACADEMIC YEAR 2008/2009

Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia

     

DARMASISWA is a scholarship program offered to foreign students from countries which Indonesia has friendly relations with, to study the Indonesian language, arts, music and crafts. Participants can choose to study at designated universities and colleges participating in the program.

        

The main purpose of the Darmasiswa program is to stimulate and foster interest in the language and culture of Indonesia among citizens of  friendly countries. It has also been designed to reciprocate scholarship programs provided by other countries for Indonesian citizens and to cultivate stronger cultural links with these nations.

        

The DARMASISWA program is essentially a “non-degree” program undertaken within or less than a year. During the period of scholarship the participants are prohibited from engaging in any political, business and/ or Research activities. The participants are also prohibited to undertake in any kind of activities which may result in the destabilizing of government programs or lead to personal profit/gain.

        

The Darmasiswa RI Program offered :

 

A.  REGULAR DARMASISWA PROGRAM

 

The Regular Darmasiswa Program is a one-year scholarship program offered to all foreign students from countries with which Indonesia has friendly relations, to study the Indonesian language, arts, music and crafts at designated Universities and colleges participating in the program.

       

Rights and Obligations of Participants

        

  1. Free of tuition fee

  2. Limited Living Allowance

  3. Willing to support the university of their choice or the university's closest learning institutions with the teaching of a foreign language  or other academic activities for more or less than five hours a week.

  4. The participants will be guided by their respective universities to rent a room / house at the participants expenses.

  5. Participants will be picked up from the airport by the organizers

  6. Participants are requested to sign a letter of agreement at the Indonesian Embassy before their departure to Indonesia

  7. Participants are requested to sign a letter of agreement with the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia after their arrival in Indonesia.

        

Time - Schedule

        

  1. Application should be received by the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia through the respective Indonesian Embassies/Consulates/Representatives at the latest by the end of March 2008.

  2. Selection of applicants will be carried out in early April 2008

  3. Participants of the above-mentioned programs will be announced in early May 2008.

  4. Confirmation from participants to attend programs must be given at the latest by early June 2008

  5. Arrival of participants in Indonesia at the end of August 2008.

  6. Orientation program for participants to be organized in early September 2008.

  7. Academic calendar for programs is from September 2008 until July 2009.

  8. For those studying at the University of Indonesia the programs academic year starts from August 2008 until July 2009.

B.  DARMASISWA SHORT COURSE PROGRAM

 

The Darmasiswa Short Course Program is a 6 month scholarship program offered to all foreign students from countries with which Indonesia has friendly relations, to study the Indonesian language at designated universities and colleges participating in the program.

 

The two types of Darmasiswa Short Course Program are as follows:

 

  1. Darmasiswa Short Course Program to study the Indonesian language for foreign students who are willing to study or take their Bachelor or Master Degree Program at Indonesian universities at their own expenses.

  2. Darmasiswa Short Course Progam to study the Indonesian language for six months with the possibility to continue to another program (other than Bahasa) for the next six months at their own expenses.

 

Those taking part in the Darmasiswa Short Course Program are not allowed to conduct research in Indonesia

C. VISA ARRANGEMENT

  1. Regular Darmasiswa Program, 6 months Bahasa Indonesia course and 6 months cultural studies

To study in Indonesia, the Darmasiswa participant is required to have a Social Visit visa issued by the Indonesian Embassy/Consulate/Representative in the participants country of residence. Upon the participants arrival in Indonesia, the above-mentioned visa will converted to a one year stay permit through the facilitation of the State Secretariat and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

 

Interested participants could not use a tourist visa, as it will create problems in the application of a stay permit in Indonesia.

  1. Darmasiswa Short Course Program

The selected participants shall apply the Limited Stay Visa/Visa Tinggal Terbatas (VITAS) on this program, acquired in the local Embassy/Consulate General/Foreign Ministry Office of the Republic of Indonesia after being endorsed by the Directorate General of Immigration, Jakarta. Therefore, participants shall send their copy of passport valid for at least 18 months at the minimum to Bureau of Planning and International Cooperation, Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia.

 

D.  ACCOMMODATION

  1. The Ministry of National Education does not provide accommodation for participants.

  2. Participants will have to find and bear the expenses of their own means of accommodation. In this regard, the universities / learning institutions where the participant will study at, shall provide advice on relevant accommodations.

  3. Participants are allowed to rent a house or a room according to their needs.

E. THE SCHOLARSHIP INCLUDES

 

  1. Exemption on tuition fee

  2. Limted Allowance on living cost of Rp 1.000.00,00 (one million rupiah) per month. (approx : US $90)

  3. Clothing allowance; a one-time payment only of Rp 300.000,00 (three hundred thousands rupiah). (approx US $25)

 

F. HOW TO APPLY FOR THE PROGRAM

 

Interested participants will have to apply for the Darmasiswa RI scholarship program through Indonesian Foreign Missions / Embassies in their respective countries.

 

Application forms may be obtained at Indonesian Foreign Missions / Embassies or downloaded through the website of the Ministry of National Education, http://darmasiswa.depdiknas.org

 

Approved applications will be sent by the Indonesian Embassy to the Ministry of National Education. The respective Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the candidates will also be notified of the selection of applications.

 

For interested participants of the Darmasiswa Short Course Program, an acceptance letter from the university of choice is needed.

 

G. REQUIREMENTS FROM PARTICIPANTS

  1. Application form.

  2. Admission letter from the university of choice

  3. A copy of latest academic transcript

  4. In good health as evidenced by a Medical Certificate duly signed by a doctor from their countries of residence.

  5. Five (5) copies of their latest passport photo of 4 x 6 cm.

  6. A copy of their passports valid for at least 18 months

  7. Return air ticket which should be borne by the applicant.

  8. A good command of English

The documents of applicants which have been selected by the Indonesian Embassy will be submitted to the Bureau of Planning and International Cooperation, Ministry of National Education or the Directorate of Public Diplomacy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which would be addressed to the :
